The European Parliament voiced its support for the victims of sexual slavery by the Japanese military on Thursday in Strasbourg‚ France.
With 54 approvals out of 57 members present and three abstentions it was a near unanimous vote to pass the resolution demanding Japan formally apologize to those who were subjugated.
The resolution calls on Japan to accept historical and legal responsibility for its crimes and to eliminate barriers restricting compensation to for the victims.
From the 1930s until the end of World War II hundreds of thousands of young girls were we’re forced into brothels to work as ''comfort women‚'' providing sex for Japanese soldiers.
Now‚ surviving victims are asking Japan to acknowledge what happened.
''Japan has to acknowledge its past crimes. That's the way Japan can stride towards the future.''
This is the fourth time that foreign countries have held Japan accountable after similar motions were adopted in the United States‚ the Netherlands and Canada earlier this year.
